What is Covered Under Employment Laws?

Businesses must never over look employment law requirements. Moreover, every organization must make all their employees aware of their rights as mandated by this law. Thus, the responsible department displays reading materials pertaining to these rights in conspicuous places in the building for everyone to see.

On this note, there are eight primary Federal employment laws that everyone should memorize by heart. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is first on the list. Under this law, an employer is prohibited to discriminate an employee based on religion, race, color, national origin and sex. This law also prohibits sexual harassment and discrimination based on pregnancy.

The next Federal employment law is the Civil Rights Act of 1966. More specifically, this law prohibits ethnic or racial discrimination. Meanwhile, the third one is the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Under such law, both men and women in the same working position and condition must receive equal compensation.

Number four on the list may sound familiar with everybody but not all understands it. This one is the Disabilities Act. This law prohibits discrimination because of any disability.

The fifth is Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 which protects people of different national origin or citizenship but are authorized to find employment in the United States against discrimination.

Sixth one is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. It is called ADEA for short. This law protects anybody age 40 and above against discrimination.

The next one is the Equal Employment Opportunity Act. This law bans discrimination on people from the minority group who have poor credit rating.

Lastly, there is a law that protects a person who has declared bankruptcy against discrimination. This paragraph refers to the Bankruptcy Act.

Those are the eight basic employment laws of authorized by the Federal government. Other than these laws, a state may observe its own employments laws.

Furthermore, there are other laws that also protect the rights of employees in the United States. An example is the Occupational Safety and Health Act. This one obliges all citizens in 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and other US territories to follow specific regulations pertaining to safety and health. Other examples include the FMLA or Family Medical Leave Act. This allows an employee to enjoy unpaid leave from his or her jobs under certain conditions. Other examples are Employee Polygraph Protection Act Labor Law. There is also the Fair Labor Standards Act or FLSA for short.
